i recently discovered this article on the huffington post via my friend naomi’s blog (lovetaza). the article was written by rachel macy stafford, author of the blog hands free mama. the first line of the article gave me chills… the kind you get when you are about to read something that you know is going to be a gut wrencher and cause you to reexamine your life.
When you’re living a distracted life, every minute must be accounted for. You feel like you must be checking something off the list, staring at a screen, or rushing off to the next destination. And no matter how many ways you divide your time and attention, no matter how many duties you try and multi-task, there’s never enough time in a day to ever catch up.
yikes. that feels too familiar. aren’t we all living a distracted life? everyone is like me, right? i guess that doesn’t really make it ok. i am constantly telling myself that i need to slow down, stop planning and overplanning and just enjoy the moments. the truth is there is never a perfect balance. some days i stop and lay on the floor for a gigling tickle fest and other days i can’t seem to take my eyes off my phone, email or other at home distractions. i guess the important thing is to remember to keep trying. the author says…
pausing to delight in the simple joys of everyday life is the only way to truly live.
words to live by. another part of her article that really stood out to me was about her daughter being a noticer. i love the concept of a noticer–these little beings who are taking in and observing all that the world has to offer. from a crack in the sidewalk to the whirring of the subway train passing, toddlers are the most amazing noticers. i never realized how many planes passed by our apartment window until hayden became obsessed with planes and helicopters. all day long he says, mama, airplane! it is funny what you are able to tune out of your life when you stop looking around.
i’m always thankful when i come across articles like this that make me stop and reflect. warning, if you choose to check out rachel’s blog, set aside some time, i just got lost in her posts for an hour. #wordsofwisdon
