last thursday we had our offical good bye party for pacifiers–we call them bobos (mainly because that is what i called them as a child). both alexa and hayden have had their bobos since they were born. it is funny how pacifiers go back and forth from being a blessing to being a curse. somedays you thank god that they exist and others you want to chuck them all out the window. alexa and hayden both had gotten to the point where they had to have TWO at bedtime and alexa was at the point of dictating what color she got… that did it. time to say goodbye.
for a while we have been talking up this “bye bye bobo” party… we said we would get balloons and cupcakes and go up on the roof to send them off to other babies. after our trip to mexico (and one too many bobos dropping on the airplane floor), we decided it was time to have the party.
(oh, and YES… alexa is still wearing the same princess dress she has worn consistently for the past 9 months… the decals of the princesses have peeled off and it seems to be growing with her instead of shrinking. being that i work in the fashion industry, it pains me a bit that this is consistently her outfit of choice, but i choose to indulge this love of hers… after all, it will end eventually and i am sure i will miss it then.)
we took the kids up to the roof (with our nanny, norma, as well) and got the party started. we brought up a handful of pink and blue balloons and cupcakes.
we tied the bobos to the balloons and gave alexa and hayden each a balloon so they could see that their bobos were tied to the ends.
it is funny how fun they thought this was… while it was charming to watch, inside my heart was breaking a little bit. i knew this was going to be a tough couple of days.
so, a hilarious side note. when it was time to send them off we realized that the bobos were actually too heavy for the weak balloons we bought. we threw one up into the air and it came straight back down! omg. how embarrassing and kind of hilarious at the same time. we ended up tying two balloons to one bobo and nate launched it off the building, into the nyc skyline and over the manhattan bridge. (alexa still says the bobos went to manhattan)
look closely above the bridge to see the 2 white balloons!
after the send off we sat down to enjoy the MOST delicious cupcakes from brooklyn cupcake. i don’t know how it’s been so long and i am just now discovering this little gem. they actually had the following flavors: flan de queso, guava con queso, tres leches and many more surprising options. we were all in heaven. our favorites were a tie between the raspberry vanilla and the dulce de leche–heavenly.
so, now it has been 3 nights and i wish i could say it has been easy… it is funny because the first night hayden was easy breezy. he asked for the bobos, but then said they went bye bye in the sky and seemed to be fine. alexa, however, not so much. we went through rounds of tantrums and bedtime stalling before she finally fell asleep on the sofa with me at 11:30 at night. she was so sad that it was kind of heartbreaking for me. the next night we experienced a similar, but toned down version. now, she seems to be fine and it is hayden who is freaking out (and he is normally our amazing sleeper!). the good news is, once they are asleep they don’t complain again… it is just getting them to go to sleep!
i guess i am glad that we did it, although i kind of liked my mom’s approach of letting me have one till i was 5 and then giving me a doll i really wanted as a trade.
